Record Breaking Fitness’ approach is based of three main ideas:
- Humans are competitive by nature.
- Vigorous movement is essential to achieve our full potential.
- Body weight exercise is superior to all other types of exercise.
Let’s take a closer look at each premise:
Humans are Competitive by Nature
A competitive spirit is observable in a variety of situations and is not limited by age or gender. Whether speeding up this morning to close the gap between you and the car in front of you, or watching a child maintain a tight grip on their toy, there is no question we are hardwired to be competitive.
Start to play any game and what begins to happen? As the struggle ensues, before you know it one player is accusing another of cheating or not playing fair. Cheating may be taking place, or the accuser may be losing and suddenly the game is not fair. If you’ve ever played or observed a game of dodge ball you know how this goes. “It hit you, you’re out,” the thrower says, “no it hit the floor first,” says the opponent.
Possibly while reading this, you are recalled experiences where a competitive environment yielded negative behavior. One of the many positive aspects of competition is the opportunities for character development. The saying that losing reveals a person’s true character is true. Competitive situations also provide the opportunity to teach the difference between comparing yourself to others versus your own best self. If you spend your life comparing yourself to others you’re setting yourself up for failure. It doesn’t matter how good you are, eventually someone will be better. That’s why Record Breaking Fitness is about achieving your personal best. Use others records to inspire you to reach a higher level, while continuing to achieve your best self.
Vigorous Movement is Essential to Achieve Our Full Potential
The evidence based research regarding the connection between the mind and body is indisputable. Our physical health affects or mental health. I have observed this personally, in that when my activity decreases my mind begins to lag. On the other hand when I am on schedule with my activity plan, my mind is firing on all cylinders.
Another reason that movement is essential is our need for play. Humans have been playing games since the existence of man, therefore play is an important part of life. Participating in this conditioning program will serve as play in and of itself, while also preparing you to play your sport of choice at a higher level.
Body Weight Exercise is Superior to all other types of Exercise
It is difficult to say that one type of activity is better than another one, let alone to say one is the best. It is a bold claim, yet one I am prepared to support. While every form of exercise has value, no matter how beneficial it may be, without regular practice it is of little worth. Keep in mind, the number one reason people give for not being more active is, “I don’t have time,” therefore, the time factor must be given a great deal of consideration.
The BEST activity from my perspective should meet the following criteria:
- Appropriate for all ages and fitness levels.
- You can do it anywhere: in your home, at school, in your hotel room, at the park, on the beach or at the local fitness/recreation center.
- Requires little or no equipment.
- Easy to learn proper technique.
- Time efficient, total body workout in as little as 10 minutes.
- Enough variation to keep you from getting bored.
- Challenging enough to keep you motivated for a lifetime.
- Targets the main components of total body fitness: body composition, strength, endurance, balance and flexibility.
- Can do it alone, with a buddy or even in a group.
- Weather proof.
- Complements all other forms of activity.
The only activity that I have found to meet all of these requirements is body weight exercise. Does that mean that all other forms of activity are useless? Of course not, in fact you should be active in a variety of ways. If you like to lift weights, run, cycle, hike, play racket sports, or any other form of physical activity, by all means continue doing it. Just do it in conjunction with the body weight exercises taught in this program.
Now that you understand the foundations of this program it is time to start breaking records.
